One mile of the thoroughfare through downtown Gainesville was shut down for four hours. Members of the Gainesville Roller Rebels roller derby team put on a demonstration. Youngsters use miniature fishing rods and magnets to try to snag the type of trash items sea turtles often encounter. The event was sponsored by the Sea Turtle Conservancy in Gainesville. Flacos Cuban Bakery set up tables for diners in the westbound lane of University Avenue. Kelly Ulmer displays aerial dance on a trapeze set up over University Avenue. Ulmer represents S-Connection Aerial Arts in Gainesville. The Gainesville Youth Combine oversees a friendly game of “gaga ball.” The game is a variant of dodgeball played with one ball. Seven-year-old Khaliq Cooper tries his hands on a rowing machine provided by Gainesville Area Rowing. Youngsters express themselves artistically with chalk at the intersection of University and Main. A skateboarder comes off the rail without his board, but landed without a scratch. A young man learns some hip-hop moves from a pleased instructor. UF freshman Jacob Patterson, 18, attains new heights on a three-wheeled unicycle that stands almost 7 feet high. He is a member of Objects in Motion. Fae Nageon De Lestang plays her violin as a member of Flat Land. Luke Sipka and Dean Spaniol, otherwise known as Bells and Robes, offer up their unique brand of electronic sounds. Ryan Jones, 9, tosses a rugby ball toward a tire target while his father and little brother watch. The Gainesville Hogs Rugby Club sponsored the skills event.
